EPSOM DIVISION
STANDARD
At the time when the Division Standard was made, in
approximately 1988, Epsom Division had 6 districts. Each district is represented
by a symbol.
EPSOM EAST
[Including the Downs].
The
Black Racing Horse
because mention of Epsom always means its famous racecourse and the Derby to
people everywhere – so what better symbol for one of the Epsom Districts than
a Black Racing Horse.
CUDDINGTON
The Church because the Church of St. Mary
the Virgin, is the centre of all the Guiding activities in this area.
All the units are affiliated to this Church and they are involved in all
its functions – so it is very much part of Cuddington District Guides,
Brownies and Rainbows
STONELEIGH
The
Tudor Rose because Stoneleigh once stood on the site of Tudor King Henry
VIII’s palace of Nonsuch and also part of the land was hunting land – hence
the Stag’s Head on the Tudor Rose.
EWELL VILLAGE
The Dog because the statue of this dog is over the entrance gate to
Bourne Hall in Ewell Village. It is an extinct breed of hound called a Talbot
and was part of the owners of Garbrand Hall’s coat of arms. Bourne Hall now
stands on the site of Garbrand Hall.
EWELL COURT
The Waterwheel because the Hogsmill River running through Ewell Court, was
used in the past at many places along its course, to provide the power for
Watermills. At one time, the manufacture of gunpowder was a large concern in the
area, so stars are bursting within the wheel to represent this.
.EPSOM WEST [Including
an area of Epsom called ‘The Wells’.]
The Well because ‘The Wells’ were
important to Epsom for many years, when it was a Spa Town and the water
contained health giving EPSOM SALTS.
The
Standard also shows a red lion which represents Surrey.
Epsom Division now has only five
Districts. ‘Ewell Village’ and ‘Epsom
East’ have been amalgamated to form ‘Spring
Downs’ District. The ‘Spring’ part of this name is for the many
springs which rise in and around Ewell Village and ‘Downs’ for Epsom East as
explained above.
